What would your clients and colleagues say is your therapist superpower?

Like Captain Marvel, I have multiple superpowers. My first superpower is my ability to connect with others using a communication style that is compassionate and direct. Another therapy superpower is my ability to help individuals find hope and believe in the therapeutic process. I often meet families who have tried therapy in the past and felt that it was not a great fit or it was not as helpful as they had hoped. It is very rewarding to watch families feel optimistic again, sometimes even after the first session.

What was your path to becoming a therapist?

My path was focused, but longer than usual as I decided to complete a PhD program in Clinical Psychology. It included 5 years of coursework with practicum experience, which means that I was seeing patients under the supervision of a licensed psychologist while doing coursework. During that time, I conducted research, developed a model of PTSD development in maltreated youth, taught psychology courses at UNLV and published manuscripts in the field of trauma. Following the completion of my dissertation, I completed a year-long pre-doctoral internship at Phoenix Children’s Hospital where I provided treatment to children hospitalized on the medical floors. The consults varied and included trauma, chronic pain, palliative care, medically unexplained symptoms, and providing support to children and families enduring protracted hospitalization. Finally, I completed a year-long post-doctoral fellowship at Children’s Hospital Colorado where I provided individual therapy and developed a therapy program for parents of children with chronic medical illness in the Medical Day Treatment Program. The path was long but definitely fulfilling and worthwhile!

How do you approach the stigma surrounding mental health and therapy?

Unfortunately, a stigma still exists with mental health and therapy although I believe the increased dialogue about mental health issues has helped reduce the stigma. I help reduce the stigma around mental health by having open discussions about symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment plans just like a physician would about a medical condition. My goal in using this approach is to make my patients feel comfortable talking about anything and everything without the fear of judgment.

Therapy Styles

Short Term (Solution-focused, etc.)
Ideal for those who are coming in with a specific problem they’d like to address and gain clarity on. Typically, short term therapies are present focused and do not dive deep into your past.

Structured
Structured therapies are goal and progress oriented. Therapists may incorporate psychoeducation and a specific “curriculum.” In order to stay on track, therapists may provide worksheets and homework.

Insight-oriented (Psychodynamic, Existential, etc.)
Exploring the past and making connections to present issues can help clients gain insight. Getting to the root of the issue and finding deeper self-awareness can help with long-term change.

Non-directive (Humanistic, Person-centered, etc.)
Going with the flow and seeing where it leads.

Behavioral (CBT, DBT, etc.)
Focuses on changing potentially unhealthy or self-destructive behaviors by addressing problematic thought patterns and specific providing coping skills.

Trauma Focused (EMDR, TF-CBT, etc.)
Recognizing the connection between trauma experiences and your emotional and behavioral responses, trauma focused therapy seeks to help you heal from traumas.
